And speaking of grids-- nothing beats the cities of SE Florida. They have
numbered Avenues (usually N/S) as well as numbered Streets (usu. E/W). Every
town is divided into quadrants, NW, NE, SW, SE. Easy enough, but pay
attention to the quadrant. My little house was on SE 4th Ave., but many
visitors ended up at SW 4th Ave., in the middle of the town's major drug
area.

Then there are the little in-between streets. N/S (or perhaps E/W, I never
quite figured it out, and each town seems to vary) are called Court, Drive;
the opposite are called Place, Terrace. Or something like that.

Theoretically, everything ---east is toward the ocean; but if you're at SW
223d Pl. that can be a little uncertain.

Newer developments have everything named at random-- Hollyhock Lane, Thatch
Palm Way, Patricia Drive, Hagen Ranch Road.
