Okay. according to my etymological dictionary, it was /u:/. So therefore, so far the name of the language is _Ju(:)d(h/z)ajajt(h/s)_ [juwzaj'ajs], with the shifts: /u:/ >> /uw/ /d/ >> /z/ after a long vowel /a/ >> /ajs/ because of the addition of the Hebrew _-it_ of language-names. /t/ >> /s/ at the end of the word {ae} >> {aj} under influence from more phonetic Hebrew spelling I'm not sure how it'll be written in the Latin alphabet yet, more phonemically or more phonetically. Some possible spellings: Ju:dajajt (: = macron over the vowel) Ju:dhajajth Ju:DajajT (where D = edh, T = thorn, but pronounced [z] and [s]) Ju:zajajs (maybe {s} >> [S] [Z] could be written with an upside-down ^) (and other possibilities using a U without a macron) Anyone have any preferences? I think i'm leaning towards either #1 (fully phonemic) or #4 (mostly phonemic, except for d/z and t/s shifts...i also like the idea of having the S^ letter). Hrrm, that brings up a problem even in the Hebrew orthography....whether to spell all /t/ with a tav and all /d/ with a dalet, or to use samekh and zayin for the [s] and [z] allophones...
