Hmm. As some one who studied and wrote a paper on LoTR in gradschool, I find his rather off-handed dismissals rather more indicative of his own mental development that that of Tolkien's fans. I think the main problem is that Tolkien is hard for the great masses to understand because it deals with the truely elemental parts of life. Therefore it is only the "children" and the truely wise who can really grasp what he is saying. Those who fall in between fail to get the point. I'm probably one of the "children" but sometimes it is hard to tell the difference between a child and a wise one. They have more in common with each other than either has with the middle.
