Well, I don't really like to be called a nerd or a geek (not that I'm not one, but I like to think that I don't fit into any category :) ), nor that I have the "mental age of a child" (at least for this one the author didn't subscribe to it but merely quoted somebody else), but for the rest I must say that this is terribly accurate. But French critics are not that bad compared to American critics towards Tolkien. Two months ago I even saw a French critic on TV advocating that every one should read at least once LotR (and it was not on a program about the up-coming trilogy, but simply on a cultural magazine). Strangely enough, as I saw it written by Stephen King, American fantasy and SF have always had a better welcome in France than in the US... Christophe. http://rainbow.conlang.free.fr
