Yes. [Ej] to me sounds much like /&i/ ("cake"; simi'ly, [E] often
sounds like /&/ "hat", othertimes /e/), whereas [e] sounds a lot like
/e/ ("head"). I also distinguish [e] from [e:] ("haired"), which I
never attempt to diphthongise. OTOH, [ei] and [i\:] I have some
difficulty distinguishing from /i:/ ("heed"; which is something like
[Ii]).
The things our brains do to confuse us!
