Ah! But those are 1) limited (they can only convey specific types of
information, note that I said *flexible*), 2) they are not built on a
finite number of building blocks, every human language is based on
finite units, spoken languages have a finite, and relatively small,
number of sounds, and signs in sign languages are made up of basic units
(hand orientation, hand shape, etc.), which are also finite. I think I
remember reading that ASL had something like 50 of these "phonemes"
(they used a different word).
