That also settled a nagging question I had, whether the stone was
originally never seen again at all.

(It seemed a bit odd to me that "many years ago" I met a stone, which
I then chucked into a lake and didn't see again for "many months",
implying that I did see it again between the time of the occurrence
and the time of narration.

I had considered interpreting it as "never again" and translating it
as such, but only after I had already sent off the text.
Fortunately(?), it did turn into "never again" after a few more
iterations :D)
