D'oh! You're right, I thought the Dutch vowel pattern was valid for
German "helfen" also.

I don't know.. We have of course pouvoir - je peux etc. but there is
less resemblance with Germanic stems where the stem vowel changes and
the opening and closing consonants remain the same. And I'd like to
use them as examples for some francophones I know who are currently
learning Dutch.
