I was always under the impression that the English verb 'bear' (in the past tense, at least) was the transitive form of passive 'born'. Like, "She bore a child. The child was born." It seems that born has lost its ability to take an agent, but at least in my mind the two verbs carry a derivational relationship. --- Shreyas
