Your sociohistorical explanation of the reasons why "write" and "speak" were related this way parallel my original intent, as the Rihana-ye culture is in a premodern technological phase and literacy is probably limited. Most of the documents generated so far concern the military aristocracy, the priests, or the merchants, not the lower classes. John Leland
