The technological level of the Saalangal is about the iron age. They
smelt iron and use it to make mostly swords and knives, as well as things
like plough blades and metal fittings for their oxcarts. They also do gold
smithing and silver smithing, most of which is used for jewelry. It's hard
to tell really since they have had contact with so many cultures.

They don't have one religious text. They do have old copies of sanskrit
and buddhist texts, but these are starting to rot away (they are written
on palm leaf books, and most Saalangal cannot read these anyway).
However, there are several collections of myths that are endemic to the
island. One recalls the journey of Takál ( means "brave") who traveled to
the undeworld to bring fire to the people. Takál is the most popular hero
of the Saalangal, and is similar to Heracles and Gilgamesh in many aspects
(he fits the common hero archetype). There is also a book on herbal
knowledge, as well as one on sayings, proverbs, as techniques for couples
to use among themselves (kind of a Saalangal Kama Sutra).
