I wouldn't interpret it thus; I understand dust to be a mass, not discrete quantities. And though there could in fact be discrete quantities of dust gathering (say, under the davenport and under the end table); any such units are seen as parts of a corporate whole. Now, "dust bunnies" are in fact discrete and individual agglomerations of dust. "Dust bunny" is a count noun.
