Personally, yes. Before coming to the US, I could tell New York from
Boston from Southern, and that's about it. Everything else was just
American. Actually I sometimes mistook Boston for British, so that might
be some guide to how lousy my accent skills are.
After living in North Carolina for nearly four years, I can now
distinguish several kinds of NC accent, and I can tell some of the
Southern states apart -- Louisiana, Texas, Georgia, NC. I haven't yet
mastered the NC/VA or NC/SC distinctions, which I guess I'll pick up with
time.
