It was Robert A. Hall. It wasn't a book, it was *three* books, tho the last
appeared much later.
"External history of the Romance languages" (Mostly dispensable for purely
linguistic purposes.)
"Proto-Romance Phonology"
"Proto-Romance Morphology" (I think, I haven't got it here.)
