Conlanging with Excel?

Dear list,

it seems that quite a lot of people are using Excel
for conlanging purposes.  My question is what you
do and what tricks you use.  Can it be used for
such things as vocabulary generation and sound
changes (I suppose not).  What *can* you do?
Can you e.g. use regular expressions to find words?
I must confess I've pretty much never used Excel for
anything...
