Not sure, but I think already in pre-imperial times. An alternative way is to re-introduce /h/ thru an *s > /h/ sound change, in which case a definite article with initial /h/ could derive from _ipse_: this actually became _isse_ in Romance, and if _ille_ could be shortened to _le_, _illa_ to _la_, then why not _isse_ > _se_ > _he_, _issa_ > _sa_ > _ha_. An s > h change might be a good idea since you IIRC have a VtV > VsV change. And thanks for informing me about the existence of postposed definite articles outside the Scandinavian and Balkan areas! /BP 8^)> -- B.Philip Jonsson mailto:melrochX@melroch.net (delete X) ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~__ A h-ammen ledin i phith! \ \ __ ____ ____ _____________ ____ __ __ __ / / \ \/___ \\__ \ /___ _____/\ \\__ \\ \ \ \\ \ / / / / / / / \ / /Melroch\ \_/ // / / // / / / / /___/ /_ / /\ \ / /Melarokko\_ // /__/ // /__/ / /_________//_/ \_\/ /Eowine __ / / \___/\_\\___/\_\ Gwaedhvenn Angeliniel\ \______/ /a/ /_h-adar Merthol naun ~~~~~~~~~Kuinondil~~~\________/~~\__/~~~Noolendur~~~~~~ || Lenda lenda pellalenda pellatellenda kuivie aiya! || "A coincidence, as we say in Middle-Earth" (JRR Tolkien)
