Re: Conlang Flag Design

Okie doke, my opinions:
(1) I guess I can see how the red is a bit too angry-looking. I
guess variation 2 is my favorite, though I'm still wary of the
vertical yellow line at the top center (coming out o fthe sun).
Couldn't the purple and black just meet there?
(2) Regarding my new flags, I found a website (whose link I
won't post because it apparantely can't be accessed [Lord knows
how I got into it]) that listed the heraldic colors, and had those
funky French-looking names that were being discussed here a
while ago (you know, purpure, or, etc.). It also gave an explanation
of what those colors mean. There was an orangey color and a gold
color which is very much similar to the original sun color. The
site, however, said that the gold color meant "prosperity", and
the orange color (tenne?) meant "worthwhile ambition". I thought
"worthwhile ambition" fit how we view conlanging, so I used that
color. And, as for the blue, that was the only blue they had. I think
the result is ugly, but people wanted to see heraldic colors, so I did
a version. Now, Adrian told me that those "definitions" of what
the colors mean should only be taken as what the colors *usually*
mean. That being the case, I might as well change the color of the
sun in the second version of the flag to gold. As for the black strip
cutting off the sun, well, it's supposed to be a sunrise. That's why
it's cut off. For a possible color variation, the black could be dark
blue (for the sea), and some other color could be chosen for the
sky. Also, the hieroglyph for the tongue is the *real* hieroglyph
for "tongue"; I never learned hieratic (and certainly not demotic).
As for a sun with rays, I was avoiding that, because I'm not really
*that* good at designing things on a computer, but I'll give it a try
just to see if it works. If it doesn't, I won't bother posting it.
(3) I think the Minimalist version is too minimalist. Though I think
the idea of combining the background with some of the other
ideas is interesting. (Though, of course, that might end up looking
like Adrian's original combination, anyway.)
(4) I liked the look of Barry's flag, but I didn't like the mouth and
tongue. It looks like an eye, and if it were an eye it'd be a good
eye, but the pupil would be, well, a mutant pupil. It might be
interesting to see the "tongue" glyph in there instead of the mouth
and tongue. Also, what is the white? If it were a combination of
the two colors, so that the real world and creative world were
meeting to produce a conlang, that would be neat.
(5) Of Shanth's flag, the second is most workable, but a rationale
for the colors would be nice.
In general, I guess I'm kind of warming up to the color purple...
