What's the aorist tense?

Hello again,
For some time, I've been thinking about to get rid of the aorist tense
in Ayeri. The main reason is because I don't know how it works. But OTOH
things I don't know how they work are always nice for me to include in a
conlang so that I can see how they work. Conlanging is also my
linguistic playground so to say. Thus I kept it.
What I know, or at least think I know about aorist is that it appears in
old Greek and indicates timelessness, IIRC. But I cannot see the use of
marking verbs for not being in any tense. I think I'm wrong with this.
The header of this mail says it all: What's the aorist tense?
Thanks for help,
Carsten Becker
