For myself, I assume names began to be used as soon as language developed since even some species which have no language (e.g. apes) seem to identify individulas. How and when language developed? There're some attempts to tie this to brain size, jaw, mouth and throat structure, based on reconstruction from fossils; and at least one attempt to tie it to group/herd size. All interesting, but for me, all in the category of hypothesis.

Ah, my partner has the same issues with historical inaccurancy.
