The Techians consider children that are exceptionally intellegent -- and
exceptionally strong-willed -- people chosen by God for greatness.  Most of
these prodigies are adopted by the royals and are trained to be advisors,
spokespeople, even rulers.

The Techian national epic, _The City of Dreams_ (the title is variously
translated as _The Hoped-For Kingdom_, _Tonight's State_, even _The Promised
Land_.), includes the tragic tale of a young king who was a child like thus;
he was betrayed by his much more compliant older brother, and the nation was
betrayed, and was conquered by the northern nations on the Nile, Egypt and
Nubia.
