Strangely, that's never bothered me. I've always had a tendency to be a
sort of passive observer, rather than active participant, in
conversations and the like. When I'm with two or more people, I tend to
be quiet and just listen to the other people talking, only rarely
speaking. I've often suspected that there's a social person hiding
underneath my shy exterior. :-)

Ditto here. Heck, I have two or three personalities online, depending
on the person I'm chatting with, all of them quite distinct from my
real-world personality. :-)

I used to dread strangers coming up to me and trying to talk to me. I'd
try to get away from them, typically giving one-word or at least vague
answers to their questions and the like.
