Yes indeed! A strong Japanese accent in this language could really turn
people
against you. "r" is always insulting! (Except between close friends with the
right sense of humor, of course).

It's an aveolar tap, like <r> in Spanish. It isn't that I dislike the sound,
it just decided I wanted a sound sybolic relationship, and I chose l ~ r. My
idea is that /l/ is continuous and "more pleasing" but /r/ gets cut off, so is
more abrupt and hence less polite.
