Well, the English /r/ is usually described as a semivowel. There are also
velar (pronounced on the roof of the mouth) and uvular
(pronounced in the back of the throat) semivowels, but they're very rare.

There was a really excellent book published a little while ago, but since
I can't remember the author or title right now, it won't do you much
good. I'll have to look it up and then relay the info to you.
