I don't know if this is an accurate assessment, since i don't get to
watch as much anime as some friends of mine do, but i get the impression
that it's very common for foreign religious and mythological imagery and
lore to be borrowed and used however the anime-maker feels like, whether
its the least bit faithful to the original source or not. Is that
accurate, or do my friends just like the 'weird' anime? :-)
