Almost certainly the former. English words with the "gyno-" root (e.g.
"gynecology", as Sally mentioned) are (nearly?) univerally pronounced
with /gai_^n/. In isolation the sequence |gy| can go other ways, of
course; most words in "-gy" are /dZ)i/, (turning and turning in the
widening) "gyre" has /dZ)ai_^/, as do derivatives like "gyroscope", and
as we discussed on here a month or so ago, when not short for
"gyroscope" (and when distinguished from such by the speaker), "gyro"
has a /ji/.
