I disagree. I think phonetics is for anyone who wants to meaningfully
discuss any concrete examples of languages, con- or nat-.
You wouldn't be able to take part in a physics discussion without first
mastering (to a greater or lesser extent) the rules of algebra, and the
same theory should hold at least at strongly in linguistics. Know the
perfect from the imperfect, and know /S/ from /q/.
