The latter is conventionally spelled "kook", just to clarify. I didn't say the distinction had *no* functional load (otherwise [U] and [u] would be allophones), merely that it isn't large. I myself said [r\uf] instead of the local form [r\Uf] when growing up, and was teased for it, but certainly not misunderstood.
