It does work but it remains a small percentage of all the food that
is produced. Even so, I would hazard the guess that it sustains far
less diversity than most rangeland here in the west. Crop farmers
do not tend to encourage other herbivores. Neither do ranchers. But
my experience has been that I much more likely to see antelope, deer,
elk, eagles, marmots, bears, etc. in rangeland than in cultivated
fields. Neither group of farmers may like rodents, but land that has
been turned over to soy bean production might as well be a lifeless
desert for most species.
