It does work but it remains a small percentage of all the food that is produced. Even so, I would hazard the guess that it sustains far less diversity than most rangeland here in the west. Crop farmers do not tend to encourage other herbivores. Neither do ranchers. But my experience has been that I much more likely to see antelope, deer, elk, eagles, marmots, bears, etc. in rangeland than in cultivated fields.
