Something similar happened in Germanic, though I'm not clear on the
details-- but IIRC voiceless stops were preserved if the IE accent fell on
the following vowel, but became voiced if the accent preceded. (Then later,
Germanic shifted all accents to the 1st syllable)-- so we have Vater
'father' (final accent in IE) vs. Bruder 'brother' (cf. Latin pater,
frater-- medial *t in both cases)
