Well, I've used METAFONT only a little, so I can't claim that I "know" it.
The one (and possibly only) resource on METAFONT is the definitive book by
the creator of METAFONT itself, Donald Knuth. It is one of the volumes of
his magnum opus, "TeX, a typesetting system" (or something to that
effect). IIRC, it's titled "The METAFONT book".
Unfortunately, none of the bookstores in my locality carry any of those
volumes any more. (Heck, they don't even carry Leslie Lamport's LaTeX 2e
book any more, either.) The only sure place you can find them is at a
university's library. Search for 'Knuth' and 'METAFONT' and you should
find it. If you *do* find a place that actually sells these books, please
do tell me!! I'm dying to purchase a copy of that work.
