Probably because Italian is more conservative. That is, in many cases, learning the Italian is like learning the root form that the Spanish and Portuguese is derived from, whereas for Italians to understand Spanish and Portuguese, they must "reverse" the changes. Granted, that's a bit of a generalization, but I suspect that it generally holds true. Much the same reason that Portuguese-speakers find Spanish easier than Spanish-speakers find Portuguese. -- "Their bodies did not age, but they became afeared of everything and anything.
