Understanding the culture of an antagonist makes it easier to avoid
more conflict than you've bargained for. And it's easier to understand
the culture of those who speak the same language. What I mean is, it's
easier to successfully pull back from the brink if you know where the
brink is and understand what lies beyond the brink. I am here talking
about antagonism both between nations/peoples and between individuals.
In other words, sharing a language is not sufficient to prevent violent
conflict, but nonetheless shared language fosters shared culture and
shared culture fosters reduction in violent conflict.
