It is used to be commonly used by a friend of mine... he's gay, but he
used to go to great lengths not to reveal the gender of his friends
partners etc when he was telling stories at work (he's a friend from
work), and it was *so* awkward, and kindof obvious as well. Luckily he's
more out of the closet now so I no longer have to bear hearing long
stories about specific people being told using "they".
