In Ursula K. LeGuin's _Earthsea_ books, parts of the Earthsea Archipelago are
called the "East Reach", "South Reach", etc. These areas could be seen as
reaching outwards from the center of the archipelago, and I had assumed that
this use of "reach" was her own invention, but I suppose it could be connected to
what you're discussing.
