(Synchronically, of course. If "bitch" were not also a taboo term, it
mightn't be surprising to see "dog" specialize to only "male dog".)

And now, able to think more clearly, not being rushed, I remember that
the only conlang I currently have with noun classes bases them on
animacy, not gender. Even my romlang Ibran's dropped gender. D'oh!
