I initially had the same knee-jerk reaction when I read his assertion that
he was gay at 13. "How could he know at 13?"
But I know that I knew from the time I was 5 that I prefered to be around
men, though I had no name to attach to the feelings, and never acted on them
until I was 18.
Unlike Jake, I my parents were never supportive of me if I wanted to do
anything which fell outside their conservative ideas of what was "normal" -
e.g. I wasn't allowed to learn to play the piano. In a way their consevative
attititude helped me - since they did their best to instill in me the idea
that any and all forms of sex were bad, when I first had sex with a man, I
felt no more guilty about it than if it had been with a woman.
