Glottochronology is nowadays rejected by most historical linguists, as it is based on assumptions (lexical replacement rate is constant over time and the same for all languages) that have turned out to be false.

The best historical linguistics textbook I have read so far is _Historical Linguistics_ by Lyle Campbell. Greetings, Jörg.
