Perhaps you're thinking of "sill"? "Sill" comes in both sour cream or
plain ol' some-sort-of-pickle-juice forms. My step-mother, a 3rd
generation American though of Swedish descent on her father's side,
noshes down on this regularly, especially at Xmastime, on crackers or
small pieces of pumpernickel bread. "Lutfisk" is the more traditional
Xmas fare, but I've neither seen nor tasted it (we've heard it's "an
acquired taste" [read: *nasty*], though).
