Contrariwise, seemingly transparent distortions can completely block
intelligibility. Still in the realm of children's songs, consider
"Maresy Dotes". I don't even know exactly what's going on there
phonetically, but you have all the right phones in all the right
sequence and yet a perfectly banal English sentence seems to be
gobbledygook.

Speed is an interesting thing. Most recently, thanks to "American
Idol", I was reminded of Elton John's "Crocodile Rock", in the chorus of
which he manages to squeeze the entire word "crocodile" into one
syllable.
