Interesting pair, that, since native speakers would probably _not_ confuse
them in speech (as opposed to lyrics). The "beat" of sentence timing in
English is phrase-based, and both of these examples have three timing
units -- but /aid/ gets assigned to the third unit in the first example
and to the middle one in the second example:
Surely -- the Cross -- I'd bear
Shirley -- the cross-eyed -- bear
