TECH: Sligh Site Redesign

I was wondering if I could get some opinions on the new layout
I've been working on (suggested by Mark Reed awhile back):

That's the test of the main page I've been working with.  I've
tested it with Safari and Firefox on the Mac, and it works...
reasonably well.  If you have a different computer/browser,
take a look and tell me how it works.  To compare:

In particular, try to resize the page; let me know if the text in
the sidebar extends beyond the dark blue band at an ordinary
viewing length (for the browser window).

I haven't done the black and white version yet, so just look at
the blue and blue.  Thanks!  :)
