Even I as an L2 speaker of English do that, although for me it's rather something like [s\_+], but it's not a fully articulated [S]. I do that not because of imitating native speakers but because it comes quite naturally while the tongue is slipping from [t] to [r\]. The postalveolar"ic" fricative in between those sounds is I think just a slipped-in (epethentic or how was it you call that?) glide to make pronunciation easier, just like the [p] in /"tS)Om.ski/ => ["tS)Omps.ki] (is that the right pronunciation anyway, [O]?).
