Well, I think my view is equally valid whether the monotransitive or
ditransitive is more basic, since "The dog was given to John" is the
passive of "I gave the dog to John", and "John was given the dog" is the
passive of "I gave John the dog". Whichever is more basic, "dog" in the
first pair, and "John" in the second pair behave the same as "John" in
"I saw John/John was seen".
