May it be noted that Bulgarian does exactly this - [o~] gives [@], as in
_l@k_, Rus. _luk_ (bow (the one which goes with arrows)), Lithuanian
_lankas_ "curve", or _@g@l_, Rus. _ugol_, Eng. _angle_.
