I don't think it's "juvenile", just confusing.

It may be an interesting exercise for you to transcribe all of your
examples into IPA and then describe the alternations strictly in
terms of this transcription. After you accomplish that, you will
better understand the difference between the orthography and the
phonology and how they are related to each other.
