yes, i have a problem disambiguating the two. Apologies for confusion. I'm sure my explanation is rather juvenile (all those linguistic explanations I've read don't seem to have rubbed off on me), but I'm not sure what to do to improve it.

Soundwise, a long consonant is not considered to be the same as a short one ( /n:/ does not equal /n/). two short nasals in a row: drop one. two long nasals in a row: shorten one. I'll work on paying attention to this when I do a better job on this phonology explanation. Thanks for your help! Aidan
