I'll agree that Jan 1 is pretty nondescript. Although it is really
darn close to perihelion, which usually falls around Jan 4.

Well, making up something to celebrate in the middle of (northern
hemisphere) winter makes a lot of sense precisely because it's
such a bleak season and there's not a lot to celebrate otherwise.
But the Solstice and Christmas celebrations would seem to have that
covered, making New Year somewhat redundant.
But at least it's the beginning of a frickin' month. :)
