The Saalangal calendar system has names for the days, the weeks, and the
months, and the way they date things is to say the day, the week, and then
the month. Years are simply numbered. The names for the gods and goddesses
are also the names for the things they have control over.
Days: There are ten days in a Saalangal week. Each are named after a god
or goddess.
Laál - Life Goddess
Kámaw - Day / Sun God
Ángi - Fire God
Ubâ - Air God
Péngi' - Nature Goddess
Pandák - God of Chaos
Turaw - Earth Goddess
Kalíl - Water Goddess
Kélam - Moon / Night Goddess
Bálu - Death God
Weeks: There are four weeks in a Saalangal month. The names are of the
four major elemental gods and goddesses.
Ángi - Fire God
Ubâ - Air God
Turaw - Earth Goddess
Kalíl - Water Goddess
Months: There are 9 full months in a Saalangal year. The last month is
considered the close of the year and is a 5 day festival. It also gives
the year 365 days. An extra day is added in when the days dont fall in the
seasons they should (in the Saalangal homeland the seasons are the rainy
and dry seasons).
Laál - Life Goddess
Ángi - Fire God
Ubâ - Air God
Kámaw - Day / Sun God
Péngi' - Nature Goddess
Kélam - Moon / Night Goddess
Turaw - Earth Goddess
Kalíl - Water Goddess
Bálu - Death God
Uyát - Closure/End
Years: These are numbered. There are two cycles that the Saalangal
recognize. The first is a span of 1,000 years. This is somewhat like our
century. It is believed that 1,000 years is 1 year in the life of the gods
and goddesses. A god or goddess lives for 100 of these 1,000 year cycles.
The major cycle is considered 100,000 years. It's thought that everything
starts over at the end of each of these 100,000 year cycles (basically the
end of the world). In their calendar, we are in year 24,932 of the major
cycle, and in year 932 of the minor cycle.
So, we now get to how they show dates. Dates are written day, week, month,
year in the minor cycle, and optionally the year of the major cycle, so a
random date is: 7 Turaw 1 Ángi 6 Kélam 932 (24,932)
