I suspect that he does meam sex, but societies also have gender. Several USA
indigenous ones had 3: male, female & two-spirit (labelled "berdache" by
overly opinionated European colonizers). One Siberian society had 7, if I
remember correctly.

I agree - I try never to expect anyone outside the USA or CANADA to know
state/province abbreviations.
