This question came up on the NetHack newsgroup a while ago (it's one of the things you see in the game when you're hallucinating) and the consensus was that it had one eye and one horn, could fly, and ate purple people. Not being a purple person I don't have any first-hand experience with it ;-) <<<<<< I recall having a board game (if that's what you'd call it) of "The Purple People Eater" when I was a young lad. I forget the actual rules of the game, I think it was like the game "Operation" (and maybe "Buckaroo"?), in that it was a fine-motor-control exercise. As I memmy it, the people were a very reddish-purple (somewhere near <220,0,40> (r,g,b)) and the people-eater was a more recognisably purple colour (nearer <90,15,125>, but mottled). OFF: One thing about the people-eater was that it consisted of a rigid plastic frame, over which a rubber "skin" was draped. The total size and shape of the "skin" (completely detachable from the frame) was not very much larger than a childs head.
